Please see below information on the spelling schedule:
Mondays
Students will take the first half of their spelling words and write one sentence per spelling word. I am requesting that students have more than 3 words in each of their sentences. Example: I will not be accepting sentences like “I like crowns.” as a sentence for the spelling word “crown”. Challenge your child to make more descriptive sentences and see what they come up with! If there is an odd number of spelling words for the week (for example 15 words), it is acceptable to write either 8 sentences or 7 sentences.
Tuesdays
Students will take the rest of their spelling words and finish writing sentences until each spelling word is accounted for.
***Students in the past have asked if they can use a plural or past tense form of the word and that is completely acceptable! However, they must study it as written for the test.
Wednesdays
Students will write ALL their spelling words 3 times each. I tell parents that it can be helpful for your child to spell out loud each time as they write it.
Thursdays
Students will make “spelling equations”. Example: let's take the spelling word cat. Students would write c + a + t = cat. They will put the short symbol over the letter a to describe that the vowel has a short sound. If there is a word with a silent letter, I tell students to write it out as a silent letter. For example, in the word “hike” there is a silent e at the end. The equation would be h + i + k + silent e = hike. There should be a long symbol over the letter i because it makes a long sound. As we move on in the year, I encourage students to try using subtraction as well. For example, b + a + t - C = Cat. I show them how to do this in school, so hopefully it won’t be too confusing! Don’t forget to study tonight, too! Tests on Fridays! Please feel free to reach out with any questions.
