6th Grade students participate in Trout in the Classroom as part of the school’s STEM curriculum . (TIC) is a cold-water conservation project run and funded by the NJ Department of Fish. In October, trout eggs are delivered to classrooms across the state, including St. Thomas the Apostle. Students are responsible for feeding them, cleaning the tank, and testing the water. On May 1st during our field trip students release the fingerling trout.
After saying good-bye to the trout students visit the Pequest Hatchery in Oxford, NJ. Here they participate in catch, release or keep fishing program. The goal is to educate children about the environment, how to care for it, and the importance of being good stewards to the Earth. While most of the fish caught are released a few are kept to enjoy during lunch.
